I’m hopeless when it comes to false lashes. Like, I have tried and I know it takes practice, but right now, it’s just awful. So I want a mascara that can help give a nice amount of definition, lift and colour so it might ‘look’ like I’m wearing falsies, even if I’m not.
I’m quite lucky as my natural lashes are already quite long; I’ve been told on many an occasion that I have lashes to be envious of. But still, once you’ve spent some time putting together an eye look, the lashes can make or break it. A thick, full lash can offer a sense of drama and really help make the colours you have chosen pop. False lashes will do that too, obviously but we are taking baby steps here.
During one of my most recent shopping trips, I was perusing the Too Faced display in my local department store, and was immediately drawn to the most beautiful mascara component I have ever seen; the Too Faced ‘Better than Sex’ Waterproof Mascara. I know, you should never be suckered in by pretty packaging; and for that, I am learning my lesson. This isn’t my first experience with this brand, but I have to admit, I’m not sure how much more I want to explore…
Better than Sex? Not likely…
The name alone made me smile, so naturally I wanted to give it a try. But yeah, I was taken in by the beautifully designed component. When you pick it up, it’s got a good weight to it. It feels solid and luxurious. The sea foam green colour of the tube is dotted with what look like water droplets. It’s such a simple idea but it looks awesome. When you pull out the applicator, the handle maintains a good balance. The head of the wand has an hour glass shape (I don’t know what this is supposed to do, honestly) and picks up a LOT of product.
No need for lashes?
The ‘Better Than Sex’ Waterproof mascara is (as you guessed it) supposed to be waterproof, and is designed to thicken, lengthen and curl lashes for extreme volume and dramatic lashes. With a single coat, lashes are supposed to feel defined and stretched. Two coats are supposed to add more curl and drama and three coats is supposed to offer the most intense and voluminous lashes possible, without the need for falsies.
According to the blurbs on the packaging, in a consumer study; 97% of particpants saw an increase in volume and length. 94% stated that their mascara lasted all day. The ‘Before’ and ‘After’ photos on the packaging looked almost too good to be true; it looked like the model was wearing false lashes! This was going to be epic…
… An Epic Fail
Well I have to say it, I really do not like this mascara. At all. Now, I need to bear in mind that mascara is one of those things I do struggle with, so part of the reason I hate this could be down to me being an idiot when I’m applying it. But still, I hate this mascara. I always curl my lashes prior to application, in the hope that whatever mascara I apply helps keep the shape, definition and lift. Sadly, the ‘Better Than Sex’ mascara ruins it. For a start, I find the formula to be far too thick, and the wand tip picks up SO much product. Once it’s applied to my lashes, everything feels heavy and thick (and not in a good way). It just seems to pull my lashes together and I lose all definition. The lashes do look thicker and fuller, but they also now look chunky. And that’s just one coat.
Second and third coats just made everything feel worse. My lids started to feel so heavy and I just hated how it looked. It also transferred to my lower lashes very easily. I’m wracking my brains to think what I possibly could be doing wrong; I’ve looked at tutorials and what-not, to ensure I am applying it right. But no matter what I do, I just cannot get this mascara to work on me.
I am not impressed. I don’t truly believe this mascara is waterproof. It transfers far too easily and it smudges. I can pull off clumps right off my lashes. This mascara is so dry. I did not expect a mascara that costs £19 a pop to be so disappointing. Now I’ve read that the original ‘Better Than Sex’ mascara is supposed to be better; so in the future, I will perhaps give that one a try. But for now, the waterproof version is a massive ‘NO!’ from me. So I will take suggestions for a decent mascara that gives volume, lift and isn’t clumpy and gross! Hit me up with your suggestions.
